Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque (Red Mosque)
“Candy-striped architectural jewel tucked inside the bustling alleys of Pettah”
About & Heritage
Towering over Second Cross Street in the lively Pettah bazaar, Jami Ul-Alfar is recognized globally for its whimsical, hypnotic red-and-white checkerboard and spiral brickwork. Built by the local Indian Muslim merchant community in the early 20th century, sailors approaching Colombo harbor historically used its towering minarets as a navigation landmark.
Completed in 1909, this world-renowned Indo-Saracenic marvel dazzles visitors with its distinctive red-and-white swirling brick patterns, pomegranate-shaped minarets, and striking clock tower.
