Mount Lavinia Beach & Headland
“Golden sands, colonial romance, and lively seaside seafood terraces”
About & Heritage
Mount Lavinia has long been Colombo’s favorite coastal retreat. Named after Lovinia, the Portuguese-Sinhalese dancer who won the heart of British Governor Sir Thomas Maitland, the area blends romantic heritage with bustling beach culture. In the evenings, the shoreline comes alive with beachfront candlelit dining, fresh grilled seafood stalls, live calypso music, and panoramic views back toward the illuminated Colombo city skyline.
Situated 12 km south of central Colombo, Mount Lavinia is famous for its sweep of golden beach, gentle surfing waves, and the legendary 1806 colonial Governor’s Mansion presiding atop the rocky headland.
