Independence Memorial Hall
“Monumental stone monument honoring the birth of an independent nation”
About & Heritage
Set amid the manicured parklands of Cinnamon Gardens, Independence Memorial Hall is rich in national symbolism. Designed by a committee of prominent architects, its open colonnades rest on dozens of intricately carved stone pillars displaying historic frescoes, while sixty stone guardian lions stand watch around its elevated perimeter.
A majestic national monument built to celebrate Sri Lanka’s independence in 1948. Modeled after the royal Magul Maduwa (Celebration Hall) of the Kingdom of Kandy, flanked by stone lions and green lawns.
